Read Richard Wakile’s Take On His Wife’s New Drink, ‘Red Velvet Cosmo’

Okay you guys, RealityAired.com was among the first to try it. Kathy Wakile’s “Red Velvet Cosmo” cocktail really does taste like red velvet cake just as she said it would - and we’re still trying to figure out how she did it.

We were at the Real Housewives of New Jersey’s star’s bottle signing yesterday at the Bottle King on Route 23 in Kathy’s hometown of Wayne, N.J., and we got to see how this well-known baker on the show translated one of her confections into an alcohol-based drink. It seems like the next best thing to one of the great dessert treats she’s known for.

The event marked the debut of “Red Velvet Cosmo” – the first product from her new liquor brand, “Sin Spirits.” Kathy said she wanted to match the flavor of her red velvet cake as closely as possible – and her husband, Richard, says she did just that. Btw her cake recipe is attached to each bottle.

Victoria, the Wakile’s 18-year-old daughter, was also there to celebrate the occasion along with other family members including Kathy’s 75-year-old mother, Maria Pierri; and Kathy’s sister, Rosie Pierri. And just when we gave up on expecting another one of the Housewives to perhaps show up and give their cast mate support, in came Melissa Gorga and her daughter, Antonia, as things were winding down.

“It tastes just like the dessert,” Richard says of the Red Velvet Cosmo. “As she says, it’s like having your cake and drinking it too.” He adds that it’s something guys can enjoy although it’s a ready-mixed cosmo cocktail, comes in a pretty bottle, and might seem a little “girly.”

“Today I see more men walking around with drinks in Martini glasses,” Richard says. “They’re not like our father’s were,” he adds, noting a friend who’s a  football player likes appletinis. “That’s what’s happening out there.”

Richard notes there’s another reason men might be interested in the Red Velvet Cosmo. He says that because it’s not too sweet and it’s very tasty, a guy might like it as a go-to drink for his love interest if he wants to work some romantic magic. “More guys should buy this for their girlfriends. It’s a drink that sneaks up on you.”

But Kathy’s hubby notes that the reason he personally likes the new cocktail is because it’s a reflection of who his wife really is and what she’s about.

“At the end of the day she’s not profiting from something that doesn’t have anything to do with her,” Richard explains. “It’s not an endorsement. She’s a baker.”

Daniel Lipman, director of E-Commerce for Bottle King, says that whether Kathy knew it or not, she was on to something trendy and fresh by coming up with a cocktail based on a cake flavor.

“It’s become one of the more popular categories of beverages,” Lipman says. “There are some flavored vodkas with a devil’s food cake (taste).” He adds it’s a trend that’s been developing over the past year-and-a-half.

Lindsey Daly and her friend, Steven Wiltbank, were among the dozens on line to get their bottles signed by Kathy. The two say they love Kathy and RHONJ so they weren’t about to miss out on buying her new drink.

“I love the show because the places are so recognizable,” says Lindsay, who goes to Ramapo State College, located in Mahwah. N.J. near Wayne. “The drama is interesting and it’s fun to watch with a lot of other people.” She adds, “We quote them a lot (the Real Housewives cast).”

Steven explains, laughing, “Like we’ll say (Kathy’s signature statement for the show’s opening), ‘People think I’m sweet, but I’m tough, so don’t cross me.’”

“A lot of us at school really love the show,” Lindsay says.

Stay tuned for more photos of the bottle signing.
